A Well-deserved Celebration of a Spectacular Life
Chester Beatty Library, Dublin – Friends of Dalkey Archive Press and members of the Japanese community came together last Friday, 2nd of February 2018, to celebrate Yoshiko Ushioda’s beautiful memoir about a life dedicated to caring for Japanese art masterpieces in the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin. Through a series of insightful and touching episodes, Ushioda presents the true story of her fascinating life as a Japanese emigré in Ireland.
Introductory remarks were made by Japanese Ambassador to Ireland Mari Miyoshi; director of the Chester Beatty Library Fionnula Croke; UCD lecturer Dr Declan Downey; the author herself, as well as the translator Etsuko Kanamori, while author John Toomey represented Dalkey Archive Press Dublin. The vibrant surroundings of Dublin’s best museum contributed to the joyous and relaxed atmosphere of a truly successful evening.
Caring for Japanese Arts at the Chester Beatty Library is part of the Dalkey Archive’s Scholarly Series. The 143-page memoir was translated by Etsuko Kanamori, who also lives in Dublin, and published by Dalkey Archive Press in January. It is available at good bookstores and online at Amazon.com.
